Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to feel confident and informed before starting your therapy journey. Find answers to our most commonly asked questions below.

General

What is online therapy?

Online therapy, also known as teletherapy or virtual therapy, is professional mental health counseling delivered through secure video sessions from the comfort and privacy of your own home. It provides the same quality of care as traditional in-person therapy, with the added convenience of not needing to commute to an office. All you need is a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.

How does online therapy work?

After you complete a brief intake assessment, we match you with a licensed therapist who fits your needs. You will then schedule your first session and connect with your therapist through our secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Sessions typically last 45 to 55 minutes and follow the same evidence-based approaches used in traditional therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other proven methods.

Is online therapy effective?

Yes. Extensive research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for most mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and relationship issues. Many of our clients actually prefer the online format because it removes barriers like commuting, scheduling difficulties, and the discomfort some feel in a clinical setting. The vast majority of our clients report meaningful improvement within just a few sessions.

What is the difference between therapy and life coaching?

Therapy focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, processing past experiences, and addressing emotional or psychological challenges. Life coaching, on the other hand, is forward-focused and helps you set and achieve personal or professional goals, improve productivity, and create actionable plans for your future. We offer both services at Coping and Healing Counseling. If you are unsure which is right for you, our intake process will help determine the best fit.

Services

What conditions do you treat?

Our licensed therapists specialize in a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, ADHD, OCD, bipolar disorder, grief and loss, relationship issues, anger management, self-esteem challenges, stress management, life transitions, and more. We also offer specialized services for couples and teens. If you are not sure whether we can help with your specific concern, please reach out and we will let you know.

Do you offer couples therapy?

Yes, we offer couples therapy and relationship counseling. Our couples therapists use evidence-based approaches to help partners improve communication, resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, and strengthen their connection. Whether you are dating, engaged, married, or navigating a separation, we can help. Both partners join the same secure video session from wherever they are comfortable.

Do you offer teen therapy?

Yes, we provide specialized therapy for teens ages 13 to 17. Adolescence comes with unique challenges, from academic stress and social media pressures to anxiety, depression, and identity exploration. Our therapists are trained in adolescent psychology and use age-appropriate, evidence-based techniques. Parents are welcome to participate in the initial intake session, and we keep you informed of your teen's progress while respecting their confidentiality.

How long are therapy sessions?

Standard individual therapy sessions are 45 to 55 minutes. Couples therapy sessions and initial intake assessments may run 60 to 90 minutes depending on the complexity of your needs. Your therapist will discuss session length and frequency during your first appointment so you know exactly what to expect.

Do you prescribe medication?

No, we do not prescribe medication. Our team consists of licensed professional counselors and therapists, not psychiatrists or medical doctors. We focus on talk therapy and evidence-based therapeutic approaches. If your therapist believes medication could be beneficial as part of your treatment plan, they can provide a referral to a trusted psychiatrist or prescribing provider who can evaluate and manage medication.

What platforms do you use for sessions?

We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform that works directly in your web browser or through a dedicated app. You do not need to download any special software. You will receive a unique session link before each appointment. All you need is a stable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone, such as a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

Insurance & Pricing

How much does therapy cost?

Session costs vary depending on the type of service (individual, couples, teen, or life coaching) and your insurance coverage. Many of our clients pay only their insurance copay, which can range from $0 to $50 per session. For self-pay clients, we offer competitive rates and can discuss pricing during the intake process. We believe cost should never be a barrier to getting the help you need.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, we accept a wide range of insurance plans, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Optum, CareSource, Amerigroup, Peach State, Humana, and Alliant. Insurance coverage can vary by plan, so we recommend verifying your specific benefits before your first session. You can visit our insurance page or contact us and we will help you check your coverage at no cost.

What if my insurance is not listed?

If your insurance provider is not listed, you may still have out-of-network benefits that can cover a portion of your therapy costs. We can provide you with a superbill (a detailed receipt) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. We also offer competitive self-pay rates. Contact us and we will help you explore your options.

Getting Started

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Complete our brief online assessment through the therapist matching form, and we will connect you with a licensed therapist who fits your needs within 24 to 48 hours. You can also call us at 404-832-0102 or visit our contact page to reach out directly. There is no obligation, and our team is happy to answer any questions before you commit.

Can I switch therapists?

Absolutely. The relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. If you feel that your current therapist is not the right fit, you can request a switch at any time with no questions asked and no disruption to your care. Simply contact us and we will match you with a new therapist who better meets your needs.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We strive to match you with a therapist within 24 to 48 hours of completing your intake assessment. In many cases, you can have your first session within the same week. We understand that when you are ready to start, waiting can be difficult, so we prioritize getting you connected as quickly as possible.

What should I expect during my first session?

Your first session is an opportunity for you and your therapist to get to know each other. Your therapist will ask about your background, what brought you to therapy, your goals, and any symptoms you are experiencing. Together, you will begin to develop a personalized treatment plan. It is completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. Your therapist will create a warm, nonjudgmental space where you can share at your own pace.

Privacy & Security

Is my information confidential?

Yes, your privacy is our top priority. All sessions and personal information are protected by strict professional and ethical confidentiality standards. We use HIPAA-compliant technology for video sessions and data storage, which means your information is encrypted and securely protected. Your therapist will not share anything you discuss without your written consent, except in rare situations required by law, such as imminent danger to yourself or others.

Is online therapy secure?

Yes. We use end-to-end encrypted, HIPAA-compliant video and communication platforms to ensure your sessions are private and secure. Our systems meet the same rigorous security standards required of hospitals and healthcare facilities. We never record sessions, and all data is stored on secure, encrypted servers.

Who can see my therapy records?

Only your assigned therapist and authorized clinical staff have access to your therapy records. We follow all HIPAA regulations regarding the storage and sharing of protected health information. Your records will never be shared with employers, family members, or anyone else without your explicit written authorization, except where required by law.
